The Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha is calling for expressions of interest to join the Working Groups they are planning to set up to help with the refresh of the New Zealand Disability Strategy. The current strategy is nearly 10 years old, so it is time to do a refresh.
Whaikaha are seeking interest from disabled people, Deaf, tāngata whaikaha Māori, whānau hauā, Turi Māori, Pacific people and families to be selected to be part of Working Groups to help develop the new strategy.
Information about the Working Groups
It is proposed that the new Strategy will have five outcome areas, aligned to the Government’s targets for public services: Health; Education; Employment; Housing; Justice. (These outcome areas are due to be considered by Cabinet in March 2025).
The Working Groups will meet between March and November 2025, to establish and prioritise actions to progress within the outcome areas, and to support public engagement. They will be made up of people with lived experience of disability, working alongside government officials and influential leaders from industry or sectors. Whaikaha’s aim with this collaborative approach is to bring together the people who will be able to come up with clear, achievable actions to improve the lives of disabled people.
Payment for meeting preparation, attendance and community engagement will be based on $60 per hour.
How to apply
If you, or someone you know, has knowledge, experience or subject matter expertise in any of the five areas listed above, please visit our website for more information on the Working Groups and how to apply (including in alternate formats).
Expressions of interest are due by 6 March 2025.
