We ended last year with a great Oceans of Hope Challenge which gave people the opportunity to experience sailing as a way of learning new skills and restoring self-confidence, which can be stolen by MS.

We had twenty four people from NZ, Australia, Tasmania, UK and Sweden gather to sail on Lion NZ around the Hauraki Gulf, sailing into Kawau Island, Mansion Bay, Smoke House Bay, Cove Bay, Arid Island and Moturekareka Island.

Before sailing for the week Rick Dodson, who has won several world championships in sailing, including two America’s Cups and an Admiral’s Cup was welcomed onboard. Rick was diagnosed with MS and went on to compete in the 2016 Summer Paralympics. He shared his experiences and wished everyone a good challenge.

Sailing a boat can be fun but is also hard work. Everyone helps with sailing, meal preparations, and cleaning the boat. When they are out sailing, everyone has the opportunity to be at the helm, making sure they are going in the right direction or being a grinder operating the winch to raise the sails. There is time to share highs and lows, sit and chat or just relax.

During the 5 days, they went ashore to explore the grounds at Mansion House, enjoyed a delicious BBQ where the tables were set up at the front making some feel like VIP’s! Had the pleasure of being confronted by a peacock who failed to intimidate but definitely impressed everyone when he spread his train.

There was swimming, enjoying a trips in the tender through the rocks, getting close up to the shipwreck at Moturekareka Island and enjoying kayaking.
After a long week, on the last night they settled in with popcorn and watched Maiden which they said was and emotional movie and a great way to end their trip.

We hope with sharing, experiences, highs and lows, fears and worries our Oceans of Hope Challenge will help people to live their lives to the full and to challenge the limitations they may experience from the condition.

“I have to say this was my favourite sail around the Hauraki Gulf, going to 2 new bays and having such a special experience that JoJo and the crew gave us, I am sure we will remember this for years to come.

“Thank you everyone, this has been an experience that I can’t describe and can feel myself crying just trying to put my emotions/thoughts into words. I will carry you all in my heart back to England and always”
